Helene’s Place

Filed under: Personal Sites — enyo @ 4:33 pm

Yet another site that I found through checking out my logs. Also known as “another victim”. ;)

When I first saw this site, my first thought was, “I think I’m going to be sick.” Then I scrolled down the rest of the page. My second thought was, “What a waste of bandwidth,” which was then followed by, “If this is a spoof site on bad web design, then it’s incredible.”

Why do I loathe this first page? It’s got blinky things. It’s got spinny things. It’s even got a friggin blinky background. Along with that, there are all of these stupid dolls (much like what we might use for live journal icons) scattered all over the darned page. There’s still September 11 stuff. And, worst of all, there’s music. Awful, horrible music.

Sadly enough, this entire rant was just for the first page. There’s more. :P

It was with great trepidation that I clicked the ugly, tacky picture to enter the rest of the site.

Lightning’s Wiccan Homepage

Filed under: Personal Sites — enyo @ 11:51 am

While checking out my logs this morning, I stumbled across a search for “Lightning’s Wiccan Homepage”. Since I hate to disappoint people who come to my site looking for something, I decided to go ahead and review it.

My first impression of this site is that someone put a lot of work into it a few years ago, but hasn’t done much since. It’s got too many blinky move-y things. The background doesn’t go with anything that’s on it. The Bravenet counter on it is broken (which leads me to believe that whomever owns this site has essentially abandoned it). And there’s instructions on how to enter the site. I’m sorry, but if you’re so creative in making your site that people need instructions to get inside, I think you’re doing something terribly wrong. I should *never* need instructions on how to get around a web page. And I should never have to scroll past that much garbage to get into a page.

Ancient Egypt: The Mythology

It’s stupid early in the morning, and here I am, flipping through my folder o’ sites just waiting for reviews. This one I found during random surfing.

First impressions: It’s neat. It’s clean. It loads quickly. And, best of all, it doesn’t look like every other blasted site on the web. The minimal graphics allows for maximum readability. It hasn’t, however, been updated in a while (on the front page, at least), since it claims to be using HTML 3.2, but the doc type in the source puts it at HTML 4.01 transitional. I’m also not certain that it’s the most comprehensive site on Egypt at this time, though that was probably the case when the site originated eight years ago. Even if it’s not the MOST, it’s still damned good.

Throughout the deities, there’s internal linking, so if you’re reading about Osiris and a bit about Seth catches your attention, you click the link, and there you are. Fantastic organization throughout the site. And great information. At the top of the deity, you get “just the facts”, spelled out very briefly. Those facts include symbols, links to myths, and centers of worship.

This site is definitely staying in my bookmarks. In fact, I’ll probably sit down this afternoon and read it with my son, since he’s in love with all things Egyptian. I can’t possibly give a higher endorsement to a site than “I’d read it with my child”.

This is just great work. And wonderfully copyrighted, with a great bibliography (all of which you can purchase through the site’s online bookstore). Maybe when my son is old enough, some of those books will grace his shelves. :-)
