A “Teen Witch”

Filed under: Beginners — enyo @ 7:09 am

Okay, what reaction did you just have? If you gagged, you and I have the same preconceptions. The good news is there is always hope and DesirĂ©e’s Musings is proof of that.

Desirée is a young lady who, judging from her site, has her act more substantially together than most, regardless of age. Her artwork is beautiful and original. Her musings are insightful and relevant.

When visiting, be sure to read her section on “Teen Witch” and be prepared to rethink your sterotypes.

Landover Baptists: Where the Worthwhile Worship. Unsaved Unwelcome.

Filed under: Satire — enyo @ 6:16 pm

This site is just hysterical! Before y’all go there and get your knickers in a twist, check the bottom in itty-bitty print. It’s a parody. And it’s freakin’ hysterical! All these articles are written from a beyond Christian-fundy viewpoint, and are way over the top. Best of all, people don’t realize that it’s a joke, and send in all of these nasty, irate letters. If you need a laugh, top by. It’s brilliant, and about as easy to get around as The Onion… so, it’s pretty easy.

MegasTu’s and RainBear’s Book of Shadows

Filed under: Beginners — enyo @ 7:06 pm

First, let me say that this is not the most beautifully designed site I’ve ever seen. It does about a thousand things that I absolutely cannot stand. Some pages are quite difficult to read. It does, however, actually offer some excellent information, particularly the “Etymology of Wicca” page (which is also blessedly easy on the eyes) and the “13 Goals of a Witch and My Interpretation” page. Also listed are some things on Native American beliefs, herbal information, and numerous other things. All in all, this site has a lot of critical thinking behind it, which certainly does make up for the lack of cohesion in the design. (Content is always far more important in my opinion, anyway.) It’s definitely a site that I’d recommend to any Pagan, Wiccan or not.

Liberal Mafia.org

Filed under: Personal Sites — enyo @ 6:41 pm

As soon as I entered this site, I was amused. The disclaimer is priceless. This is one of the rare opportunities when I’ve had the pleasure of surfing a site that boasts a webmistress as bitchy as myself. She’s blunt, she’s honest, and she tells it like she sees it. She’s very much an American, and loves to comment on her country (the good, the bad, and the stupid). She has an essay on Dark Goddesses written from a decidedly *non-Wiccan* viewpoint. In short, this site was a pleasure to visit. I look forward to seeing more of her views, whether I agree with her or not.

Venus’s Grove

Filed under: Beginners, Eclectic, Personal Sites — enyo @ 5:33 am

My first thought upon viewing this page was “Ah, my eyes!” It looks like someone’s animated fairy collection got loose on this page. You know, one or two animated images, from time to time, isn’t that bad. Five animated fairies, plus an animated unicorn, numerous animated American flags, and a damned fairy trail following my cursor is just ridiculous. Other pages in the site are equally painful, and, if you have quicktime, you get the painful effect of being forced to listen to music, as well. In short, I believe that the owner of this site would be doing the internet a favor by pulling it off the net until she can a.) get some content, b.) learn to spell, and c.) learn to use graphics without making my eyes bleed.

Whoa. This is a site that has a lot to offer. There are numerous sets of free graphics (only requiring that it be a personal/non-business site and a link back) in all sorts of flavors, plus Photoshop tutorials, Wolfrose’s personal artwork, and all kinds of goodies. If you have any interest in web design at all, and want some pretty stuff that isn’t all over the ‘net, check out MagickDream.com. Lots of eye candy without being obnoxious. :)

Tangled Moon Coven

Okay, when I saw the first page, it *really* put me off. It has some of my biggest peeves. As I clicked the enter page, I gritted my teeth, fully prepared to find yet another site that sucked. The second page didn’t disappoint me. Same annoyances, and another “click to enter”. I just clicked to enter on the last page. Now I have to click to enter *again*?

Now, once I got to the third page, and was off of those annoying splash-page type things, I got to see a really nice looking site. The “student program” section doesn’t look too bad, but some of it smells like “learn by mail”, which I’m not crazy about. The essays are thought out and well-written, even though I do vehemently disagree with quite a bit of what’s in there. Bottom line: I wouldn’t recommend this site to anyone who hasn’t learned to separate the wheat from the chaff. There is, however, one article in there that’s absolutely amazing, “How do I Know What to Read? Critical Thinking and Pagan Books”. I’m sure that there are others that are excellent for all, if you can surf through all of those wonderfully easy to read pages to find them.

Tales from the Wiccan Police

Filed under: Satire — enyo @ 3:54 pm

This blog is a nearly weekly publication that attempts to correct some of the misinformation bandied about the Pagan internet in a Dragnet style. Cases include “All Witches are Wiccan”, “Death in Circles”, “Plagiarism”, and numerous others. All cases take place in the ficticious Cauldron City, USA, and all cases are investigated by the Outrageous Claims Department. This is definitely an entertaining way to attempt to clear up some common pagan misconceptions.
