Enchantress Moon’s Grove

Filed under: Art — enyo @ 9:01 am

I found this link a few days ago. A friend had made a comment about a site requesting membership to her web ring and showed us the link. I had to review it. It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed a site that I can’t stand. :)
It’s an eye-bleeder. There are some elements in there that are really nice, like the title graphics in a lovely cursive-ish font and the text color. Mind you, she used at least two different fonts when one would have sufficed, thus diminishing the value as a “nice” element. Then, of course, there’s the background, which is animated. Animation = evil.

Then there’s that awful flourescent green brick with purple graffiti look. Ugh. It’s awful. Pick a color scheme, all right? There’s also moving fairies. I hate fairies on web pages as decoration already. They’re cliche to the point of nausea. (Right up there with unicorns.) And when those fairies move, I feel that they should be shot. After all, my favorite fairies are Lady Cotterly’s.

Also, on the front page, her links page has a comment about how she’s got so many links on there that it now requires her own page. Psh. 1.) Big deal? Most sites have their offsite links on one page. 2.) It’s not that impressive of a collection. Grr.

Another annoyance: any time you click a link, the URL across the top doesn’t change. I hate that.

In short, this site is a wonderful example of what not to do when designing a web page. What a waste of bandwidth.

The few saving graces that is may have are of questionable copyright, or have been done better somewhere else. In short, I wouldn’t bother with this site unless it was to stop by and give yourself nightmares.

Magickal Dragon Dreams

Filed under: Art, Eclectic, Personal Sites — enyo @ 7:18 am

I found this site while checking the logs for WarGoddess. Apparently, someone did a search for it, so I’m guessing the web mistress was looking for a review. So, I’ll give her one.

First impressions…. It’s a pretty site. Sure, it’s done in black, but it’s not just a flat black background.

But there were things that sucked, too. The dragon graphic, while pretty, is *way* too big. If surfing at an 800×600 resolution, the whole image won’t even fit on the screen. There’s also an animated candle .gif, which I hate. And she censors her guestbook. Yeah, it’s her right, but I don’t believe in guestbook censorship. (That’s why the accusation of libel against me is still in my guestbook. Well, part of it. It’s also there in case this crap comes back up again and I need to sue them. Just in case.) There’s also links on the front page that lead elsewhere without giving you any indication that you’ll be leaving the site. There’s nothing like being sent elsewhere as soon as you get somewhere. :P

Then there’s her art. The background on her artwork isn’t as nice as the other artwork, and it kind of detracts from the black background that her art sits on. The new background breaks up the flow of the site.

She did a beautiful job on her graphics, though. I can’t emphasize that enough. What makes that so awesome is that she actually made them herself.

On the awards page… well, pages, actually, she’s won a lot, but that just doesn’t impress me for the simple reason that *anyone* can make an award. While this is actually a nice looking site overall, I’ve seen awards given to sites that make my eyes bleed. So, pardon me for judging a web site on its own merits, rather than over an award.

Some of her information is a little trite, though well-meaning. This isn’t a site out to shock anyone or piss anyone off. But the art work is lovely.

Bottom line: for knowledge, there are better sites out there, but for art work, it’s definitely worth visiting.

Wolfrose’s Den

Filed under: Art, Personal Sites, Traditional Wicca — enyo @ 4:49 pm

Another beautiful site by Wolfrose!

The Den contains some awesome essays by Wolfrose, Lynna Landstreet, Eran, and others. It’s easy to navigate, easy to read, and beautiful to look at.

If you’re interested in Traditional Wicca, specifically the Gardnerian tradition, this is a great place to look. This Priestess of the Wicca has put a lot of hard work and dedication into her site, and it shows!

MagickDream

Filed under: Art — enyo @ 7:03 pm

Whoa. This is a site that has a lot to offer. There are numerous sets of free graphics (only requiring that it be a personal/non-business site and a link back) in all sorts of flavors, plus Photoshop tutorials, Wolfrose’s personal artwork, and all kinds of goodies. If you have any interest in web design at all, and want some pretty stuff that isn’t all over the ‘net, check out MagickDream.com. Lots of eye candy without being obnoxious. :)
